Star Kingdom Stakes
The state of New South Wales boasts an impressive number of elite Group 1 horse races which attract top trainers, owners, jockeys and contending horses from all over the country every year. The majority of these exciting races take place during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, run from February until April, and consists of an impressive range of great race days such as the Coolmore Stud Classic Day in March. The Coolmore Stud Classic Day has one of the fullest race cards out of any meet, and punters and spectators involved in the events are in for a real treat! Held at the prestigious Rosehill Gardens Racecourse, the highlight events of the day are the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Classic and Ranvet Stakes. These high status races are followed by four more Group 2 events, before the final race of the day, the Group 3 Star Kingdom Stakes.
The Star Kingdom Stakes is an open handicap race run over 1100m, with stakes set at $100 000. Previous to the race, the Autumn Carnival hosts a range of other handicap events that are a great lead-up to the Star Kingdom Stakes, including the Group 3 Newcastle Newmarket Handicap (1400m) held the week before, the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) three weeks before, and the Group 3 Frederick Clissold Stakes (1200m) right at the start of the carnival. Runners in the Star Kingdom will often be aimed at some of the higher status events later in the autumn including the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) held three weeks later at Randwick on Australian Derby Day, and the prestigious Group 1 Doncaster Handicap (1600m) held a month after the Star Kingdom. These other autumn open handicap events are far more lucrative for the entries with stakes set at $300 000 and $1.5 million respectively. The longer distance of the Doncaster Handicap often proves to be too testing for many of the Star Kingdom competitors, however The Galaxy is the perfect distance race and horses’ performance in the Star Kingdom often influences their Galaxy odds. This is a great little betting double in the Autumn Carnival, and if you can select a sprinter who wins both the Stark Kingdom and The Galaxy you will see a very nice return!
Elite horses are not usually drawn to the Star Kingdom Stakes, but strong sprinters in good form are attracted to the race, especially those who perform best at the shorter distance. Notable winners include Bradshaw (2003 and 2002) and Friend’s Venture (1993 and 1992) who both managed two successive wins in the sprint race. Bradshaw was also runner up to Taikun in 2004, and placed second in 2000.
